Ursula Grant, Ebony Varnam and Will McGuckin argued their way to win the North Canterbury debating final held at the Waipara Memorial Hall during the evening of Thursday 6 July. Their opponents, Leithfield School, provided worthy competition and our team won by a mere half a point. Very close! The moot was 'That smartphones should be banned from children under 13 years'. Leithfield debated the affirmative and we debated the negative in the close competition. The judges, from Helmore Stewart Lawyers, commented that the task of judging the winner in this debate was very difficult indeed, but praised the confidence and research skills of all of the debaters. Waipara School has made it into the final of this debating competition more than once, so the win was the icing on the cake, that ended a great last week of term for Waipara School.
