Learning about Rail Safety during Rail Safe Week netted Waipara School children an extra special treat. Not only were they visited by and spoken to by members of the Tracksafe Team about being safe around trains, they were also given a gift bag of Rail Safe goodies. And then to top it off, they carefully crossed over the main trunk railway line across from their school and walked to the adjacent Weka Pass Railway Station where steam locomotive 428 awaited them.
Climbing aboard, 428 chugged her way to Waikari with Waipara’s whole school and the junior children from Greta Valley School enjoying the ride and gazing out the window at gamboling lambs and green grass!
Watching the engine turning around at the end of the line was a highlight, after which the passengers embarked again for the downhill journey home. A huge thank you to Weka Pass Railway and to Megan Drayton, Tracksafe’s Foundation Manager, for making this happen.
